DUNN aka The Signtologist, has been doing some pretty unique painting using street signs as the canvas for a while now, and they’re awesome!
His art has a great style, with bold silhouettes and instantly recognisable legends from the world of music (especially hip hop) and popular/counter culture.
So we thought we’d have a chat with DUNN and find out a bit more about his art and background!
WG: DUNN, how did you started doing your art using old road signs?
DUNN: Well it was a total accident in art school, I ran outta supplies late night on a project.
WG: What other artists you into?
DUNN: I paint people who i admire and respect, my goal was to give back the inspiration that they had given to me. Athletes, artists, musicians, entertainers all are people i have gifted my work to, I am close to 200 total gifted pieces.
I am influenced by Boris Bally, Justin Bua, iceberg slick, but after studying art for years my work is impacted by artists ranging from the Renaissance era, to Andy Warhol and the pop movement to present day cartoons and graffiti.
WG: What music you feeling at the moment?
DUNN: Lately i have been streaming live dj sets from around the world on ustream stations. I particularly like De La Soul’s room, whatever they are playing is always way better than the radio and keeps me vibin.

WG: What materials do you use to do you art?
DUNN: I used old discarded signs i receive from the city and then recycle into art, i also get their reflective sticker scraps so i am able to add more reflective elements back into my work and then after that it’s just sharpies for the outlines and paint.

In the 2nd to last photo there is a man painted with a tshirt that says “APE” I recently found some tags in my area that have a person wearing the same “APE” shirt and have been trying to figure out what it is. I have a photo of one of them on my flickr at if someone who knows what this is could let me know by commenting one of the pics I’d be ever so grateful!
