WG – Which came along first for you, graffiti or animation? How did you get into both?

LC Beats – Graffiti came first. I got into graffiti because I was into hip hop, and graffiti is part of hip hop culture.

I started off painting the local storm drains around my area with mates from high school, I slowly started developing my style, noticing local writers getting up and appreciating the different forms of graffiti: tagging, throw ups, pieces.

I got into claymation in 2008 when I enrolled in a one week claymation course. I was then inspired to use claymation to produce my High School major work in visual arts called “Mayhem in May Lane”.

WG – You more of a wildstyle fan or a classic fan or you into everything?

LC – I like clean detailed line work with good use of cutbacks. I’m a bit of a fan of the classic style. I like pieces that have strait line work and contrasting use of colour.

I like wildstyle too because, it takes you several moments to read it and appreciate the effort of it.

WG – You ever go out painting?

LC – Yes, I aim to go painting once a week.

WG – I’ve heard things are getting harsh in Oz, have you seen a drop in the amount of street art? Are people really getting busted or stopped from painting?

LC – There are new laws which have been implemented in Australia which relate to the possession of graffiti implements such as markers and spray cans which makes for the government implementing harsher penalties. A 3 month jail sentence is what the authorities are trying to enforce at the moment for graffiti.

These new laws have made graffiti writers more cautious about doing their art and they are looking for commissions to paint.

WG – Favourite artists at the moment?

LC – I like what Askew has been up to lately. I’m also keen on Bates‘ work. But there are a lot of dope writers here in Sydney. I dig all the work of the artists in my movie: Teazer, Phibs, Pnash and Mistery.

I chose artists whos work I admire from the Sydney graffiti scene.

Cheers to LC Beats, have a look at his claymation animation trailer for the new short film ‘Kaos in King St.‘ that shows the impact of the new Australian anti-graffiti laws. The new law states that any person caught in possesion of an aerosol spray can be jailed for their art.
