WG briefly got to meet up with graffiti artist Mr. CENZ at the Urban Art 2010 show in Brixton in July, he was doing some live painting (pictures to come soon). He answered some questions…

WG - What name/s do you paint as and where you from?

CENZ – I go by ‘Mr Cenz’ or just ‘Cenz’ from South East London.

WG - Where did the name CENZ come from?

CENZ – Well when I first started I used to write ‘Cence’’, so it just evolved into ‘Cenz’ over time really.

WG - How long you been painting, how did you get into it?

CENZ – I started painting in 1988 when I was about 11years old. Got into to it through my cousin who was into hip-hop and breaking and was friends with Fade 2 of the Non Stop Artists.

I didn’t really start doing much illegal stuff until I joined the Assassins Crew in Bromley in 1990 though.

WG - What paint do you like to use?

CENZ – Mainly Belton for the consistency and cleanness. But sometimes a bit of Montana Gold, 94 etc.

WG - You do a lot of characters, you prefer doing those to lettering or you into both?

CENZ – I always try to do a piece and a character- bit of an old school mentality I suppose! I enjoy both but doing good original letters is much harder work.

WG - You can only paint with 2 colours for the rest of your life, which 2?

CENZ – Scary thought…mmm would have to be petroleum blue and pastel petroleum blue!

WG - Favourite trainers/shoes?

CENZ – My Adidas!

WG - What artists you like at the moment?

CENZ – Mmm…digging people like RT Crew, Heavy Artillery, Mash One and Corze at the mo. Anything with nice tight lines and forms which is original basically. Its hard as I try not to look at too much stuff anyway!

WG - What you got planned for 2010?

CENZ – Doing loads of community stuff over the summer then just the usual commissions and trying to find time to do my own pieces at least once a week!

WG - What music you listening to at the moment?

CENZ – Normally a lot of old soul, funk and hip hop.

DONDI who sadly passed away in 1998, made his mark on the graffiti scene during the late seventies and early eighties painting the subway trains in New York with bold, colourful pieces. After being featured in the graffiti bible ‘Subway Art’ and the classic film/documentary ‘Stylewars’, the American artist quickly became an icon within the graffiti-art scene in his own right.

Although not directly linked with the Bristol graffiti scene and the UK, Dondi and and his fellow N.Y writers had an extensive impact on many teenagers around the world, including a young Bristolian and Wild Bunch affiliate, Robert Del Naja who would later go on to form the world-renowned band Massive Attack.

As well as producing two decades of the most influential alternative dance music, 3D has been creating art for over 20 years – some of which has appeared on the band’s album covers, such as Heligoland, he has also been featured in the celebrated book ‘Spraycan Art’ alongside legends such as Goldie, Seen & Mode 2.

A lucky second winner will bag themselves this signed Beezer print of Robert Del Naja aka 3D in action, worth £95, kindly donated by Tangent Books! The image – taken from ‘Wild Dayz’ one of many aspiring street art books published by Tangent.

We’re big fans of EINE here at WG, so seeing his ‘Twenty First Century City’ stencil was being taken by the apple-head David Cameron as a gift to Obama was pretty big news. Ben EINE said…

“I was just completely shocked, yeah, just completely shocked and completely amazed to get that call,” admits the 39-year-old.

“I’m not a massive artist by any stretch of the imagination. Yes, I’ve been in papers and magazines, but you never have any idea if anyone actually reads it or pays any attention.

“So, to receive a phone call from Number 10 saying they like your work, they want a piece of your work, and they want to give it to President Obama, it’s like this can’t be happening, this can’t be true, it’s just too weird.” Read the full interview from the BBC.

EINE is best known for his alphabet lettering on shop shutters in London’s Shoreditch, Brick Lane and Broadway Market areas. Before that he was a graffiti artist around the London scene. He was one of the original printers of Banksy’s early stuff but he’s got a style all of his own, and did some wicked graff in the trainyards of London.

Geovanna Gonzalez has been doing her art for a while, it isn’t graffiti but we liked it a lot. We asked a few questions to find out a bit more…

WG – Where are you from?

GEOVANNA – I am a Los Angeles native and currently attending Otis college of Art and Design.

WG – How long have you been doing your art and what do you use to paint/draw?

GEOVANNA – Art has always been a big part of my life, but at the age of seven is when I started pursuing it seriously. It was around three years ago that oil paint and ink became my choice of medium.

WG – What artists out there are you into at the moment?

GEOVANNA – The artists that interest me at the moment are Mindy Shapero and Sikader Shahzia, and some of the artists that I have been influenced by in the past few years are Yayoi Kusama, Beatriz Milhazes, Louise Bourgeois, and Dr. Seuss.

WG – How long does it take you to do a piece?

GEOVANNA – Most of my paintings are large, so they taking around two or three weeks to finish. Lately I have been interested in making fast, and in the moment drawings so they can take anywhere from an hour, two, or a week at most.

WG – What do you do when you’re not painting?

GEOVANNA – Other than painting I enjoy hiking, flying kites, fishing, riding my bike, cooking, and checking out new local artists acting through different forms of art.

WG – What music are you listening to at the moment?

GEOVANNA – Music is a big influence on my life, and I have always been interested in a variety of sounds and noise. Recently artists like The Aphex twin, Philip Glass, Lucky Dragon, Deadmau5, and DJ Spooky are musical artists I have expressed an interested in.

WG – Favourite sneakers/shoes?

GEOVANNA – So, for the past few years, boots have been the style of choice. I enjoy wearing the 80’s style Peter pan boots, Dr. martin’s, or my cowgirl boots.

Over the past three years Upfest has raised over £12,000 for Nacoa (National Association for Children of Alcoholics).

To raise funds to support the charity, Upfest have organised a bunch of pieces of artwork from some highly respected urban and contemporary artists, available to you in a silent auction that ends on the 31st July 2010.

There is a wild collab organised by the ID-IOM guys, and a beauty from David Walker amongst other things.
